From August 15-17, 2008, Katina Taylor, Vice President and co-founder of the Jason Taylor Foundation, hosted the 2nd annual “Camp Katina – Cartwheels to Character,” a gymnastics, cheerleading and life skills program for girls ages 7-12. Camp Katina is part of the Jason Taylor Foundation’s ongoing initiatives benefiting area youth.
More than 50 girls from the Marti Huizenga Boys & Girls Clubs, Overtown Youth Center and Urban League of Broward County participated in the three-day camp at the West Broward Gymnastics Academy in Davie. Campers learned the fundamentals of gymnastics and cheerleading and heard from a panel of guest speakers made up of influential South Florida women, including a former Olympic Gold Medalist, Fitness Instructor and Image Consultant who discussed a variety of topics including, healthy eating habits, physical fitness, etiquette, respect and appreciation for others and honoring commitments.
The camp culminated with a surprise visit from Katina’s husband, former Miami Dolphins All-Pro and current Washington Redskins Defensive End Jason Taylor, who interacted with the girls during various stations and posed for pictures with each of the campers. All campers received medals and certificates recognizing their participation and a select few were honored for their outstanding performance or attitudes.
The Jason Taylor Foundation is a 501(c)(3) organization whose mission is to support and create programs that facilitate the personal growth and empowerment of South Florida’s children in need by focusing on improved health care, education and quality of life.
